Going back to ancient Biblical texts, Defoe uses the ideas we have had about the Devil and holds them up to the historical evidence. This shows where many misconceptions about how we think about the spiritual source of evil, a being that started as a powerful being that was to be feared to a trickster type being who sat on our shoulders and tempted us to do evil. Most people, regardless of the backgrounds believe in an external force of evil and Defoe uses those beliefs to gives us a true picture of who and what the Devil is.

THE HISTORY OF THE DEVIL Demon Lore Series Daniel Defoe Anthony Uyl 9781520365572 Books

Great book this was originally written anonymously by Daniel Defoe. This is the devils account of certain stories and events in The Bible. Defoe as The Devil also rails against Milton's Paradise Lost in a very comical way. Fortunately a few friends and I read an antique copy of the book once a week together. We laughed and discussed certain paragraphs and the meanings. Our copy was written in Old English and added to the fun and challenge. The telling of Lucifers dealings with Eve was probably my favorite chapter in the book. Reading Defoe's account made me want to read Milton's poetic & prosaic, Paradise Lost. If this is you sort of thing you definitely will enjoy this in eBook too!

THE HISTORY OF THE DEVIL Demon Lore Series Daniel Defoe Anthony Uyl 9781520365572 Books Reviews

This book has a lot of interesting information and history. However, there are parts where the author seems to indicate that all that occured in the past was on a path to where we are now, and that where we are now is the final stop in Mankind's theological development. The book is a bit skewed to Christian ideals being the only true ones. At least, that is what I perceived. I wish I could point out to the author that perhaps where we are now is just another milestone on a longer path. At any rate, there were many jewels in this book and it was educational and thought provoking.
This book is outstanding for a person that is interested in finding out true interesting forgotten facts that are not taught. This information is vital to combating the adversary.
A semi-casual, almost comical overview of the devil in history, not necessarily all factual. some thought-provoking statements. for those who want a different take on the subject. The author seemed to skip around in history but the skipping had a purpose and wasn't hard to follow. The subjects of the devil in religion was even touched on. Try it for a change.
It was necessary to keep flipping back to the title page to remind myself who wrote this and when. The author of Treasure Island has his thumb on Beelzebub with the most accurate description of how he works I have ever seen. Throw out all the Greek mythology on this guy and truly understand why and how Satan works.
Excellent book. There were still Witch trails going on throughout Daniel DeFoe's whole life time. In America until 1692, and his entire life in areas of Europe. This book was written before "The Age of Reason" by a man of Faith. This is the books description (different edition) from the store.
The Subject is singular, and it has been handled after a singular Manner The wise World has been pleased with it, the merry World has been diverted with it, and the ignorant World has been taught by it; none but the malicious part of the World has been offended at it Who can wonder, that when the Devil is not pleased, his Friends should be angry? The strangest thing of it all is, to hear Satan complain that the Story is handled prophanely But who can think it strange that his Advocates should be, what he was from the Beginning? The Author affirms, and has good Vouchers for it (in the Opinion of such whose Judgment passes with him for an Authority) that the whole Tenor of the Work is solemn, calculated to promote serious Religion, and capable of being improv’d in a religious manner. But he does not think that we are bound never to speak of the Devil but with an Air of Terror, as if we were always afraid of him.
Truly satisfied
Reading this book was a delicious experience. You can feel the effort of a Rationalist to account for the existence of the Devil in terms of an (almost) literal reading of the Bible, but at times you wonder if Defoë is being completely serious. At the beginning the book reads like a critique of Milton's 'Paradise Lost' but then it focuses solely on the Scriptures as a source, but throughout the book the author keeps his own society very much in mind.
